Club Championship 2007/8

Last updated: Wednesday, 30 April 2008 20:42 UK

In Memory of Mike Price by John Carleton

The club championship is now underway with the same rules as last year. Please make sure results are given to Chris Wentworth, Steve Burge or John Carleton. The new trophy is named in memory of Mike Price who was one of the National Club Championship winning side of 1977. No-one who saw his nerve-jangling draw in the semi-final will ever forget it. His contribution to the team was not only over the board however: he was very much the life and soul of the party. [There was plenty of opposition for this particular accolade. During our cup run the party would generally start Saturday night and finish late on Sunday, the chess match having been squeezed in on the Sunday afternoon (one day it will all be written up for the club history.......).

Mike's expertise as a coach of young players put him years ahead of his time. He and the many hard-working enthusiasts striving at grass roots level were a big factor in the then forthcoming 'English Chess explosion'. Mike took his school team led by Sheila Jackson [later also part of the aforementioned Atticus squad] to victory in the English Primary School's Championship in those ancient days B.A. [Before Atticus].

Among the later generation of players who benefited from his clear insights and the ability to communicate his ideas was Bernhardt Klein double Varsity match winner for Cambridge in recent seasons.

Mike as well as producing training materials for juniors was also employed as a translator of chess books from German [into English rather than Scouse].

Chess was only one part of Mike's life but he is still fondly remembered by many and those who knew him were shocked by his sudden and untimely death some years ago now. His widow Carol contributed generously to the provision of this fine trophy for the club and it is currently held by Steve Burge.

The championship takes place each Monday starting at around 7.30pm and will run from September 2007 to April 2008. It's open to all members. Normal time controls apply - 35 moves in 75mins with an additional 15 mins to complete the game or if both players agree, shorter time controls can be used. There's no entry fee and each player has a White and a Black.

To ensure the smooth running of the tournament players should make arrangements with opponents in plenty of time.

Please pass results to Chris Wentworth, Steve Burge, John Carleton or email to the webmaster.

In order to qualify for the winners trophy players must complete a high percentage of games (to be determined  by Chris Wentworth and John Carleton).

3. GAME POINTS. A player winning a game shall score one point and in the event of a draw each player shall score ½ point.

4. ARRANGEMENT OF GAMES. The dates of games shall be arranged mutually between players who should notify the controller of the result(s).

5. HOURS OF PLAY. In the absence of any previous arrangement by the players concerned, play shall commence at 7.15 pm (or as near as possible to this time) and shall conclude at 10.15 pm. If both players are in agreement then both championship games may be played during the same evening.

6. RATE OF PLAY. Each player shall keep a record of the moves in each game. Any player may demand that their game be played with a chess clock, in which case a proper chess clock will be provided.

A player may also claim a draw if the position is such that no other result is reasonably possible.

7. NOTIFICATION OF RESULTS. Both players should notify Chris Wentworth and/or Tom Lawton of the result as soon as possible after the conclusion of the game. Note: Games in this tournament will not be sent for grading.
