Having watched the various late night poker TV shows, I wonder if late night chess might be of interest? Smile

Does late night poker appeal to those who might like to take up poker but haven't yet? Maybe Stewart Rueben could comment on this?

Provided it was tightly edited and presented (a Steve Davis / Andrew Martin double act) then chess could work provided that :

The games were Blitz or bullet with a commentary.

There was some focus on the individual players and that those chosen were socially acceptable to Joe Public.

There was interactive betting functionality on the blitz games

There was a beginners feature of around 5 minutes

There was a glamour element maybe with Kostenuik comparing the show. Wink

Perhaps a feature on a recent exotically located tournament by Judith Chalmers (!) Very Happy

In short, with enough variety and not too much technical chess (nothing on Q vs R endings for example) it could be made to work. Smile

At a recent chess club social the members agreed unanimously that it was about time we campaigned for chess on British TV again. It has been a long time since it was last on. With the unification of the world championship imminent and the proliferation of satellite/ freeview channels surely we can persuade one of them to show us a little chess now and then. Perhaps we need to raise a petition, or perhaps we need to approach all of the channels to see if any of them are interested.
If anyone has any ideas they will be welcomed

Big difference between chess and poker is that with poker there is very little content to the basic card game itself. Indeed if you strip away the betting there's practically nothing left. So the poker programmes tend to pay very little attention to the game but there's a lot of focus on players' faces, verbal sparring etc.

I'd still like to see it given a try though, I have fond memories of The Master Game.
