This should be a terrific event in a wonderful setting home of the 2002 Commonwealth Games and of Manchester City FC it is not often chess players get the chance to play somewhere like this (unless they come to Liverpool!)

I've been down for a look - venue will be the Boardroom Suite, light, spacious, very nice

Sven has been invited, as has Michael Johnson, City midfielder, who plays chess at Urmston

27 entries to date, well worth a trip if you are graded under 160

Search is on for chess players for east Manchester tournament

Local chess players are being invited to enter a new rapid play chess tournament to be held in March. The City of Manchester Stadium will play host to this new national tournament, the first to be held at a Premier League stadium.

Organised by Sport 4 Life on behalf of the Manchester Chess Federation and Eagle Chess Club based in Clayton in east Manchester, the tournament is being held on 2 March 20008 and can accommodate 100 entrants aged 10 to 70. Participants of all standards can take part, with over 500 of prize money available.

Tournament organiser, John Dwan, Director of Sport 4 Life said: "It has been great for us to support another worthwhile community initiative, by helping the Eagle Chess Club and Manchester Chess Federation bring the first Rapid Play Chess Tournament to a Premier League Football Stadium."

Osma Caka from Clayton's Eagle Chess Club said "We're really delighted to be able to bring rapid play chess to a local audience. We are currently seeing excellent growth in members of the club and will be establishing a regular club night in the community room of the Manchester Climbing Centre. The chance to compete on a national level is a fantastic opportunity and we're really looking forward to the tournament."

Sean McGonigle, Director of Regeneration at New East Manchester said: "The Eagle Chess Club has gone from strength to strength and this is all down to the hard work and dedication of Bill Booth and Osman Caka who have done a fantastic job of teaching local young people this skillful game. I wish all that enter the tournament the best of luck."

The entrance fee is 10 (Adults) & 5 Juniors with prizes from 25 to 120. Anyone interested in entering the tournament should contact Sport 4 Life on: Tel: 0845 1300849, E-mail: info@mysport4life.co.uk or Web: www.mysport4life.co.uk. Applications can be taken on the day.

Chess and the City - Manchester Rapidplay 2 March 2008

The first New East Manchester Rapidplay Chess Tournament was held at the City of Manchester Stadium on Sunday 2 March 2008.
A total of 56 players competed at what is believed to be the first chess event held at a premiership football stadium. The excellent surroundings of the Boardroom Suite were certainly an improvement on the usual venues for chess tournaments, although it did cost 5 for a prawn sandwich and a cup of tea!
The event was organised by Sport4life on behalf of the Eagle Chess Club in association with the Manchester Chess Federation.
We would like to thank the sponsors, New East Manchester Ltd and Equity Solutions, plus all the staff of Manchester City FC and the stadium who helped to make us welcome.
The Junior (U16) Trophies were won by:
1. Robert Bowler (Copperworks)
2. Ravi Patel (Checkmate)
3. James Bowler (Copperworks)
In the U120 section (34 players), the Trophies and prize fund were won by:
1. Farshad Ai (Sheffield) with a perfect score of 6/6, winning 100
2. Alan Sime (Macclesfield) winning 37:50
3. Bashkim Caka (Eagle), also winning 37:50
The U100 grading prize was shared by Ravi Patel (Checkmate) and Jade Stirrup (3Cs), each winning 20
In the U160 section (22 players), the Trophies and prize fund were won by:
1. M Zahir Aryan (Phoenix Yorks) with a score of 5/6, winning 100
2. Nick Barnaby (Widnes/Bolton), also winning 100
3. Phil Olbison (Chorlton), winning 40
The U140 grading prize was shared by Taher Aryan (Phoenix Yorks) and Mark Birkin (Alwoodley), each winning 20
We hope to stage the event again next year, subject to stadium availability, and maybe we can see more competitors if we avoid a clash with Mothering Sunday
