9. O-O Be7 10. b3 O-O 11. Bb2 Rd8 12. Qe2 Qc7 13. Rad1 Nc6? the reason I give this a question mark is the time Marcus spent on it. Too long for such an obviously best move. 14. Nc2 Ne8?! 15. Ne3 Bf6 16. Ng4 Bd4 17. Rd3 Gary either misses a trick here or misjudges the attack or beng an IM might be better than my computer! 17. Nd5!+/- 17... Nf6 18. Rg3 Qe7 19. Kh1 Nxg4 20. Qxg4 g6 20... Qf6 might be preferable 21. f4 f5? The only clear blunder until both players time trouble later on 22. exf5 exf5 23. Qxf5 Rf8 24. Qd3 Rae8 25. f5?! Qe1! This move clearly missed by Gary gets Marcus right back in the game. 26. h4! Nb4? 26... Ne5! is preferable both players were down to minutes before the time control 27. Rxe1 Nxd3 28. Rxe8 Nf2+ 29. Kh2 Rxe8 30. Nd1 this seems the best way to avoid be5 30... Bxb2 31. Nxb2 Re1 32. Rf3! forced 32... Ng4+ 33. Kg3 Ne5 34. Rf2 gxf5 35. Rxf5 Re3+ 36. Kf2 Rc3 37. Nd1 Rc2+ 38. Ke3 Rxa2= 27. Qf3? from his hand movements Gary wanted to sac the exchange here and he would have been right to. 27. Qxd4 Qxf1+ 28. Kh2 Re1 29. Rxg6+ hxg6 30. Ne2 but it takes a lot of guts to give up material in this fashion with just a few seconds left 30... Kf7 31. Qf6+ Ke8 32. Qe6+ Kd8 33. Qxd6+ Ke8 34. Qe6+ Kd8 35. Bd4+- 27... Qe5!? 27... Qd2!? 28. Qd1 Qxd1 29. Nxd1 Bxb2 30. Nxb2 Re2 31. Nd1 white has the advantage 28. h5 Rf6?! 28... Kh8 29. hxg6 Rxf5 30. g7+ Qxg7! 31. Rxg7 Rxf3 32. Rxh7+! Kxh7 33. Rxf3 Nxa2 34. Nxa2 Re1+ 35. Kh2 Bxb2 Fritz gives this unusual line as best and I prefer black here but only just 29. hxg6 hxg6 30. a3 Re7?! Marcus plays for a win here but this move is not best 30... Ref8 31. Qg4 Nc6 31. axb4 Gary grabs the piece but this is not quickest way to win it 31. Rxg6+ Rxg6 32. fxg6 Qh8+ 33. Qh3 Qxh3+ 34. gxh3 Nc6 35. h4 Re6 36. Nd1 Rxg6 Fritz gives this as a clear plus for Gary and I concur. One would expect him to win this. 31... Rh7+ 32. Rh3 Rxf5! 33. Qd3 Bxc3? As Gary pointed out immediately afterwards, if black swaps off here the ending is (nearly) drawn. Marcus concurred. 33... Rxh3+ 34. gxh3 Rxf1+ 35. Qxf1 Bxc3 36. Bxc3 Qxc3 34. Rxf5! Qxf5 35. Qxf5 gxf5 36. Rxh7 Kxh7 37. Bxc3 Kg6 38. Kh2+- A brave try by Marcus and an experienced win by our local IM 1-0 [Boumphrey, Luke]
