Summer Tourney 2006

Summer Handicap Tournament 2006 at the Casa

Started: Monday 15th May
Ended: Monday 14th August

This tournament was open for members and non-members and took place every Monday (excluding Bank Holidays) from 7.30 - 10.30pm. It was a casual event, games were not graded and it was possible to play as little or as much as one liked. The tournament was very enjoyable and thanks must go to Luke Boumphrey for his hard work throughout the summer and for providing regular updates to the webmaster. Now that we have a new club venue (The Adelphi Hotel) with more space, this successful annual tournament is likely to get much bigger and better.

Joint winners 2006: Frank Boyd and Geoff Jones

Rules for 2006 Summer Tournament

Game Play: Normal Tournament and League rules apply.

Rate of Play

To be mutually agreed.

Format

A double round flexible all play all. Although no player may play each other more than twice (once with white and once with black) there is no obligation to play anyone. However to be eligible for the trophy a minimum of 6 games must be played. Theoretically any number of games can be played in a night.

Handicap Formulae

You do not have to understand the formulae to play and take part. It is provided here so that if you wish and are able you can confirm (hopefully) that the organisers are doing a decent job.

SCORE = Tournament Grade- Published Grade + Game bonus+ ‘Giant Killer’ bonus

Tournament Grade is calculate in a standard way which can be summed up as;

Tournament Grade = Sum of Game grades

                                   Number of Games Played

Game Grade = Opponents Grade Plus 50 for win or Minus 50 for loss, unless difference in grades is more than 40.

Then: Game Grade = Your grade +or-40 Plus 50 for win or minus 50 for loss

Published Grade is the last published grade

Current members who are ungraded will have their grade assessed by their captains

New members who are ungraded will be assessed on the basis of their first three games.

Game bonus

1 point per game played

Giant Killer Bonus

This has been used to encourage lower graded players to play higher graded players

If the difference in grades is more than 50

5 pts for a draw

10 pts for a win

If the difference is more than 100 the bonus is trebled.

This bonus is in addition to the large score already obtained.

High Score Bonus

Introduced this year to give the strongest players a chance of winning.

For a total score of 80% 5pts for a score of 90% 10 pts and for a score of 100% 20 pts

If you have questions about the Handicap formula please speak to

Luke Boumphrey or email: lboumphrey@yahoo.co.uk

Summer Handicap Tournament 2005

Luke's report

Well after 3 months and 74 games the summer tournament is over. Congratulations to Brian Ewart who took the first place and a prize of £60. Well done to Jeremy Hawthorne in second and Farhad Amir Afshar in third. It was a close thing with the lead changing place half a dozen times before time run out. In the end Brian took it by 0.7 of a point from the early leader Jeremy. Probably decisive were his two wins against myself which took him clear of the pack. Although he got pulled back later notably by a stunning win by Farhad he had done just enough to ensure himself of victory. Steve Connors’ magnificent win against John Carlton would have put him in contention had it not been for the two draws that he got with Steve Burge. Jeremy’s early outstanding improvement carried him throughout the tournament but just failed to give him the points he needed with a few losses.

Thanks go to Steve Connor who has been a pillar of support throughout, Jim Wiseman for his encouragement, Brian for his input and work on the crosstable and John Carleton for suggesting a system which seemed to work. Of course many thanks to Farhad for his donation And of course thank you to everyone who took part I hope you enjoyed your-selves.

Until next year or I see you sooner,

Luke Boumphrey
