Players of a certain age often ask "Where were
you when England won the World Cup?" (for
younger readers this actually refers to
football) or "Where were you when you heard JFK
had been shot?" To these life defining events
some of us can add "Where were you when Atticus
6, yes 6, scored their first win?" And the
answer for me, even though the question may not
have the same ring as the previous two, is "I
was there".
Neither side was able to impose themselves on
the other and a very tense encounter was the
result. Geoff Jones seemed to have some chances
but quite a quick draw resulted. Will on board 4
meanwhile had taken some structural weaknesses
in the opening and in due course these allowed
his opponent in to put Atticus one nil down.
Sean Malkeson, whose only mistake of the evening
was to lose the toss (this is allowable only if
the captain obtains white for himself),
equalised the score by exploiting the weaknesses
he had inflicted on his opponent during the
opening phase. Steve on board 1 had a solid draw
against an opponent keen to use the "advantage "
of white to engineer exchanges.
This
left the final thrilling game. Sanjoy found
himself in a struggle with Kings castled on
opposite sides. He kept his nerve marvellously.
With material dropping off the board and his
King's position blasted wide open, Sanjoy
delivered checkmate on the opposite side of the
board - Bravo!
